เว็บตรง ts911 3 ความจริงที่น่าดึงดูดเกี่ยวกับประวัติศาสตร์รวมทั้งลักษณะภูมิอากาศการเดิมพันในแอฟริกาใต้
https://preview.redd.it/ejthxxuwxum51.jpg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8468dad4a2c04103e60f3d6a4b2a2f355c72c92e

Southern Sun

A Cliff Notes Summary of the First One Out Interviews

If you haven't had time to listen to seven hours of podcast interviews, or you didn't retain everything you heard, here are some key points. I didn't think to do this until just now, so I'll be posting it as a work in progress and updating it throughout the afternoon. That way more people will have a chance to read up before the premiere.
Karishma Patel, 37, Personal Injury Trial Lawyer, Houston, TX -First generation Indian-American Her mom was as a legal assistant, and got her a filing job at her law firm when she was 14. "I didn't have other options. I was basically told I was going to be a lawyer and I didn't disagree."She has watched every season and regularly listens to RHAP. She sits close to the TV to study the inflections on people's faces when something is said to them, so that she can think about what that means. But, her parents and husband don't share her enthusiasm for the show. Asked if it's her dark pleasure she says, "It is completely bright. It is a beautiful pleasure of mine, but it is mine and mine only. I haven't been able to find people to share it with." -Doing the show has caused her conflict. "Not only is it not expected, it's not allowed. It's kind of like being a disobedient Indian girl. You're not supposed to be doing this. What you're supposed to be doing is having babies. But I don't care. I'm a risk taker. I'm here to prove to myself that I don't need to listen to anybody else. I don't need permission from anybody else. This is my journey and I'm going to take it. I hope that people watching out there can see that an Indian woman's value does not come from doing what she's told." -She doesn't currently have children, and she says she has some decisions to make as she enters a crossroads and the next stage of her life. -Her law firm told her they'll replace her if they're able to find someone, and she can have her job back if they don't. "I didn't flinch." -Her strategy is to be non-threatening and play a social game. She doesn't look 37, and she wants to use that youthfulness to be disarming. She wants to build relationships other people believe in. She defines success by other people vouching for her loyalty when they go off and have private conversations with one another. "That means I got 'em, because it's actually the other way around." Asked if she wants to find someone she can trust, "I'm not going to be capable of it. I'm too skeptical for that. I overthink things, so I'm not going to be able to trust somebody the way I want to be trusted... If I do, that's the end of my game."
My take: Oh my God. Poor Karishma. Her story hurts my heart. She reminds me so much of myself in her isolation, her defiance and her deep feelings. I worry that her fear of trusting people could get in the way of her forming genuine bonds. But, there's nothing she can do. Society has made her the way she is. I hope she gets a lot of screen time so she can be a star of her favorite show.
Missy Byrd, 24, Military Veteran/App Developer, Tacoma, Washington -Originally from Georgia. Her family was 'decently poor.' She played basketball for the Air Force Academy because she thought it was her ticket out. -She had a brain tumor. She stopped menstruating for a year and two quarters. "I'm not dating anyone but I have breast milk. I'm a literal cow... I would look down and my shirt would be wet, and I thought, 'Dang you're clumsy. I knew you were clumsy, but you're clumsier today than you were yesterday. But it was - it was - uhh - milk." She had crying fits. She developed a stutter and couldn't look at people. Doctors told her she was just stressed. When her dad died she couldn't process emotions normally. She was about to go to the French version of the Air Force Academy, École de l'air, after graduation but because of her mental instability she was removed from school. The military shipped her to the same Air Force base as Sandra (Fort Lewis.) "I don't want to be there. Super sad. Check into the post office - fuck this. Check into the dorms - hate that." The doctor there found the tumor. She got an MRI and all weekend she believed she might have cancer. Over the next year and a half she eliminated the tumor and the symptoms using vitamins. She enlisted and worked logistics. -She made a list of the things she wanted to do now that she was going to live. "The first thing was go see Beyonce. Beyonce costs way too much money for a normal person to go see, but if you've just almost had a near death experience you go see Beyonce, bro!" She was feet away. She drove across the country. She tried weed. -She had an idea for an app, but didn't even have the computer literacy to use social media. She found a veteran's association and asked if she could intern. "They said, 'No, you should build this out yourself. We want to work for you.' I said, 'No, the fuck you don't. Okay, lemme call my grandma.'" She wrote a grant proposal and won a $1,500 office space in the center of Seattle. "Just to do whatever I want. It was like a laboratory for a child. I had Play-Dough up there. I had a white board... Just mind blowing shit when I could have been dead." -She'd seen every episode of Survivor at least three times. She started watching because her Air Force Academy basketball team was getting decimated, and she related to Foa Foa getting decimated in Survivor: Samoa. She added the show to her list. Josh suggests, "The bugs are eating you because they want some of that magic." -She isn't going to tell people her story until she's in the Final 3. "That's that Final 3 magic." She doesn't want to overly rely on strategy. She doesn't want to win individual challenges. She to build a social game and find ways to relate to everyone.
My take: She's so full of exuberance. There's not a negative bone in her body right now. She's too young and her life experience is too necessarily limited to talk around three years of her life. If she shares her story, the beauty of her perspective will cause everyone to fall in love with her and want her to do well. If she doesn't, people will sense that she's hiding a lot. I think she'll figure that out and course correct within the first day. Since she was at the same Air Force base as Sandra and she was a massive fan, does that suggest she knows her?

Ronnie Bardah, 35, Professional Poker Player, Henderson, Nevada-Born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts, 20 minutes south of Boston. They were the only Israeli family in town. 50% of the people in Brockton were from Cape Verde, and he considers himself an "honorary Cape Verdian." A couple of his friends were shot and killed at a young age. -He was a good kid and had a good heart, but he was always hustling. In Junior High he was flipping Oatmeal Cakes and Fudge Rounds for a profit. Slinging baseball cards. Both his parents gambled. They were always at the dog tracks or Mohegan Sun. He had his friend make him a fake ID and got stuck with the name Alaja Jones. He went by Al and started playing the casinos. Quit his job at Sears Automotive to play poker full time.-He played Atlantic City, Vegas, then internationally. He had his first big score in 2010 when he took 24th place in the main event for $320,000. Got to keep $150,000 after taxes. "Poker's a hard way to make an easy living. Lots of people try. We risk every day. You have to get to a point when you can manage your bankroll and I've never gone broke in the 16 years I've played." -In one of the most viewed poker hands of all time, he was bluffed out of a million dollar pot by a supermodel on a poker TV show filmed in Monaco. "She made a sick play. She had no idea what she was doing but all the stars were aligned."-He watched Borneo when it aired and got back into it when fellow poker player Anna Khait was on. He calls Jean-Robert, "kinda a lazy guy...He's really good at befriending multi-millionaires." "Anna Khait... is probably the least poker player out of all of us. She played for a couple years." "And then Garrett - He's a very, very smart, smart kid... Self-made millionaire. One of the very, very few." -He only drank water for 7.5 days and lost 25 pounds for his health and to get an idea of the conditions of the show. He thinks he'll thrive in the survival situation. "People like being around me. I like to fucking bust balls and joke." He thinks old school alliances are a good plan, but you have to adapt. He says that like in poker, Survivor players can have every advantage, but they have to really smell it. -He wants Vince out. "There's an Asian Zeke in there. What value does he bring besides ruining people and getting in people's heads? He's a liability in challenges. He looks like a little corn puff. We gotta get him outta here. Sorry to sound so mean but it's the truth."
My take: Ruuuuude. He has no way of knowing how other people on the cast are talking in their interviews, and may assume the trash talk is standard. If he were playing on some seasons it would be. But, in this particular season it sets him apart in an unflattering way, and it seems a part of the tough persona he's built up to escape a scary situation growing up and enter a fantasy career. We'll see whether his tribe thinks he's a straight talking character or a jerk.

Tom Laidlaw, Former NHL Player, Brampton, Ontario, Canada -He was with the New York Rangers for 7 years and the LA Kings for 4. Now he has his own podcast, True Grit Life (truegritlife.com). Does it with a friend, Kevin Allen, who writes for USA Today. Does motivational speaking. -Growing up on a dairy farm outside Toronto there was a pond to water the cows. It froze over in the winters and he'd play hockey because there wasn't much else to do. Went to Northern Michigan University - four year hockey captain, ranked #1 team in the country. Drafted as a 20 year old. "My buddy had a horse farm. We were cleaning horse shit out of the stalls. There were no cell phones back then. This is 1978. My father got a call at our farm house from the New York Rangers at the draft. Back then nobody went to the draft - it was just teams. They said I'd been drafted in the sixth round. He calls the farm house where I'm working. They bring me up. He says, 'Son, you've been drafted by the Rangers.' I said, 'Great. What do I do now?' He says, 'Finish cleaning the shit out of the stalls.'" -When he played intimidation and fighting was strategy. There were guys tougher than him, but he could fight and he could also play. Problem was, he fought a guy once, and from then on the guy wanted to fight him over and over. -Jerry Bruckheimer, big hockey fan, called the NHL and wanted to get some players on the Amazing Race. Tom had kept himself in shape, he had his passport. They ended up asking him about Survivor. He'd watched it before but not for a while. He wasn't so sure he wanted to play a game where you hurt other people, but friends helped him get his head around it. He was very impressed by Christian's toughness in the endurance challenge. To prepare for the show he studied how he reacted to different situations, how to control his heart heart, etc. He wants the mental challenge.
My take: Tom really ticked me off when he spoiled a couple of outcomes of this season. That's a betrayal of the producers, his cast and the viewers. But, if that hadn't happened I would like him. He's an easy-going, charming guy. His life experiences are a bit different than anyone else who's been on the show, which is what you want.
Vince Moua, 27, Admissions Counselor, Merced, CA -His family is Hmong. His parents lived in Vietnam in the destruction left by the war - dead bodies, guns, people who wanted to kill them. They went to refugee camps in Thailand. Then his dad became a Montana farm hand. He met Vince's mom in the US, but she came from the same place. -Vince is from small town Merced, California - the 209. Few people he knew went anywhere but the UC system and community college. He went to Stanford, one of only 7-10 Hmong. He realized the significance someone can bring to people from the same community. He tried to be pre-med but realized "no, not today." The issues of access he cared about came well before people got to the hospital. He ended up going with education. His mom was a teacher, "But when I was growing up she said, 'Yo, if you become a teacher Imma disown yo ass.' To all of us. But, that's always kinda been my jam." -He lived in South Korea for five years. He taught English in a town. Then in Seoul ahed worked with low and middle income students who wanted to study outside of Korea. -He's a Survivor superfan, who even mentions on his Tinder account that he plans to be on Survivor. His parents were worried about him doing TV because he's not out as gay to his extended family. He comes from a clan where his dad is the "top dog" and Vince is "the next top dog." In the Asian American/Pacific Islander community when you come out, it's your family who faces - in a sense - dishonor. For a long time he distanced himself from his family, hoping they'd all be less hurt if they found out and disowned him. He always tried to find friends who would be there for him should his parents not be. A year ago his mom asked him rhetorically if he was gay. "I was try'n to go around it. I was like, 'Gurl, you don't wanna know! Yo ass keeps asking!' But she kept asking, asking. So finally I told her 'Yeah, I am!' and she was crying. My dad was like, 'Oh, my son!'" But, Vince is fine with who he is and wants to show kids like him that "let's hope that it gets better." Now his parents just want him to win. -He'd like to play an old school strategy but "I'm not afraid to cut a bitch." With the tribe he's going to be Homeboy Vince from the 209, but when he talks to the camera he's going to tell people "Don't underestimate your narratives." This past year with Crazy Rich Asians, he wants people to know that there are some Crazy Hood Ass Asians.
My take: What a character. Vince has a clear point of view - Hmong, blue collar, gay - which is unique to him in Survivor lore. Even though double minorities have sometimes had trouble fitting in socially on Survivor I think somehow he's going to pull it off. As unlikely as this sounds I could even see him being a Cochran-esque winner.
Aaron Meredith, 36, Personal Trainer, Warwick, Rhode Island -He's very keyed up at Ponderosa. Rambling so fast it sounds like you're listening to 1.5x. He's read four books so far - Relentless by Tim Grover, Can't Hurt Me by Dave Goggins, Iron Cowboy by James Lawrence, Harry Potter. -He was an engineer at a building insulation plant. He was miserable, too antsy sitting at a desk. Couldn't focus. So, he drove up and down the East Coast popping kettle corn - from Maine to Florida - traveling with carnies. Bartended for a while. He'd played college football and baseball, lifted since high school, and he and his friends wanted to get "huge and jacked and ripped." The owner of the gym suggested he become a personal trainer. He ended up working mostly with middle aged women and it taught him empathy. Now he owns two women's-only fitness studios. He puts supportive women around one another and offers them the positivity to seek self-growth. -He's also a party boat emcee. Lights, DJ, bar, drinks. He's an extremely social person. -He'd first applied at 23 - 6 or 7 times over the years. He was in the mix for Cook Islands and David vs. Goliath. -He's been married 7 years and has a 5 year old son. His son is a huge fan of Survivor. Libby Vincek is his favorite player. Kara Kay was his next favorite. Aaron is already sure Molly will be his son's favorite. "He has a type. He He likes the attractive blondes. He says, 'I like them because they have a nice face.' I like mommy because she has a nice face too." The boy was very concerned about his dad going on the show. He said, "Dad, I don't want anyone to laugh at you and make fun of you." Aaron said he wanted to win. His son said, "But you might not win." When they watch the show he'll always ask, "Do they like him? Do they like her?" If Aaron is portrayed in a negative light he'll have to sit down with his son and talk. He doesn't want to play a deceitful game, but he will, because he doesn't care how he's portrayed.
My take: His story about his son is one of my favorites from all these interviews. I hope he gets to work with Molly. His adrenaline is too high. I hope he calms down a lot when the game starts. But, someone so social and sweet hearted who can win challenges and take themselves to the end has got to be a contender to win.
Chelsea Walker, 27, Digital Content Editor, Los Angeles, CA -Chelsea just took the cast photo and they put her in the third spot from the bottom, a good omen because a weird number of winners have been in that position. "Your girl's number three. I got this!" -She's a Jersey girl. She went to the University of Maryland. "I didn't do Survivor: Maryland or anything." She studied Broadcast Journalism. She knew the generic emails for NBC Universal and emailed random people until someone replied. Now she's been in LA a year. She did coverage of award shows. Now she works at IMDB, where she helps Kevin Smith with his show. She just interviewed people at SXSW. -She's been watching Survivor since she was 8. She's cried in every interview because this means so much to her. She's trying to explain that at the point she starts crying again. "It's been such a dream of mine and To be told no year after year after year - these past six years have been a total mindfuck. I've basically been called every single year. I've been to finals three times. Survivor is my one true love, but the one year they didn't call me I got really pissed off so I tried out for Big Brother. I ended up becoming the alternate and got my key being filmed and all of that crap. But I don't like that show anyway." -In September 2017 she was at a WeHo bar for her friend's birthday when, "Oh shit that's Jeff Probst." Her girlfriends all know she's obsessed, so she pulled the waiter over and asked what that guy was drinking. So, Chelsea sent another one over. "I told my friends, 'Take my credit card. Split the bill, because I can't come back after I do this. As soon as the waiter drops off the drink I'm like, 'Jeff, this one's on me. You can buy me the next one at finals.' And I just walked out of the restaurant... That was a big move!" They didn't call her again that year, but Jeff still remembered when they talked this year. -She's been working out at four different gyms - weights, pilates, yoga. Push ups. Memorized puzzles. Reading How to Win Friends and Influence People, which she keeps in.a Bible sleeve so people will think she's religious. She also carries Harry Potter because she would trust someone who read HP. She wants to keep it cool. Make one on one connections. Eventually find idols - and not tell anyone she has one - and make calculated moves. "I don't want to be a Jacob. No offense."
My take: Hearing this girl cry from joy because she's so happy to be on the show makes me emotional. She's a real go getter. I wish I were that damn fearless. Truly, I wish I were more like her. I hope her pure zest for life comes across on TV and she doesn't get stuck with a purple edit just because of her age and gender. I also hope no one decides to get threatened by her as a competitive girl and vote her off premerge. I think she'll go far. Hope so.
Dean Kowalski, 28, Account Executive, New York, New York -Referring to himself in the third person, "Dean is 28 years old. As we mentioned, he lives in New York and he prides himself on being a well rounded person when it comes to interests, abilities, personalities... If I'm listening to Drake and Lil Wayne, I gotta go home and cry to This Is Us.. I can play basketball but also think about our place in the universe." He likes to tag basketball courts with a peace symbol with a ball on it which he makes using a stencil. -He structures most of his interview with Josh around an Outwit, Outplay, Outlast format, explaining why he excels at each. -He grew up in an affluent suburb. His dream was to play in the NBA. He was 5"9 3/4, so he set his eyes on college basketball as a realistic alternative. In order to get looks from colleges he went to a school 30 minutes away - top five in the country, Nike would fly them around for games and give them free Jordan sneakers. He was one of only 4 white guys in the whole school and the only one on the team. He played with Kyrie Irving, the #1 overall draft pick. "My friend said you look like the Make a Wish Kid who just wants to be on the team for a day." He played at Colombia University, where he was co-captain his senior year despite averaging two minutes a game. He became a teacher, then did sales for a tech startup in New York. He now sells ads for Google. -He's a fan, but far from a superfan. He started watching Brenda's season. (He thinks it was Nicaragua, but it was actually Carmoan.) He works with a superfan who freaked out when they had a meeting at H&R Block with Carolyn Rivera and they went out to Bourbon Street with her. He kept watching for five years and thought he could do well. He hates when people are all talk, so he sent in a tape. For the video he interviewed random strangers on the street, who had never met him or seen the show, and asked them, "Why am I going to win it?" A barber, a construction worker. He's going to tell people he's in marketing, not sales - people have sales.
My take: I'm just not that into him.
Elaine Stott, 41, Factory Worker, Rockholds, NY -When Josh asks her not to touch the table she asks him, "You seen that Bart Simpson commercial, right? Don't touch my Butterfinger? I'm already hungry thinking about it." -"I had a pretty rough way to go growing up." Her single dad raised her and her three brothers. She was the youngest. "I was raised like one of the boys. Know what I mean? Daddy didn't know how to raise no little girl." He worked 16-17 hour days. The kids raised themselves. "When little children make their own decisions, they make poor ones." She was a hellion. -She's originally from Woodbine, Kentucky, Nick Wilson's hometown. Her god sister went to school with him and she knows him through the grapevine. "We rode on different sides of the track. 20 years ago he coulda been my lawyer, because I was on the other side of the law. I'm not bad. I've just done some things." Public intoxication several times. "I come from a dry county. It's like Footloose. We cross the state line to get a beer and when you come back you're in trouble." She stole a newspaper stand once and had to do community service. "I was a little bit mean." -She went to live with her grandpa and cleaned her act up, by which she means that she started smoking a little weed and playing sports - basketball, softball, track. She played softball and judo in college. "I couldn't do nothing real technical. We had Brazilians on the team who could do flying arm bars. But if I got these claws on you and got ya on the ground I'd waller you to death." In casting she put this guy Will in an armbar. She was gonna choke him but didn't know if she should. -When she graduated, her girlfriend was a college Freshman so she went to all the same parties and ballgames for four years. Then she realized she needed a job. Now she drives a Ford truck for a factory. She's been there 15 years. She works 12 hours, 7 days a week. -Growing up her mom "was always in my life in some sense. She'd never miss a birthday. She'd be homeless, but she'd still call." Elaine and her brothers bought her cars, and places to live, and got her jobs. "In a sense I've been mourning the loss of my mom my whole life." Once Elaine was homeless herself and there was snow on the ground. It was cold, and her teacher took her in. Gave her Christmas presents. Made her go to prom. Survivor was a thing they shared, and the teacher was gonna be Elaine's loved one. But within a one year period the woman lost her daughter, her husband, her dog and then had a stroke. Now "she walks like Frankenstein" and can't go. Elaine got Probst to talk to her, and she can't wait to watch. In October Elaine's biological mom went into a coma. She was on life support, but Elaine wouldn't unplug her. Her mom came out of it and seemed to be doing a lot better only to die very suddenly of a heart attack. -Her girlfriend and her girlfriend's two sons are gonna be watching. The 18 year old doesn't know because he can't keep a secret. The 13 year old helped her lose 20 pounds doing crossfit to come out here. She wants the money, but she really wants "some of that soul searching, that life adventure, that life changing - some of that. You know what I mean? Gimme some of that soup! Lemme eat some of that up! I want this show to build me up, because I feel like it can. I sure hope to hell it don't tear me down."
My take: About 12 sobbing emojis in a row. She's my favorite. If she gets voted out premerge I'm going to go into mourning. And how can you not sort of expect that? I am going to be so upset if they just dismiss her because she's older and looks out of shape and sounds country. If that happens, I want another Second Chance season next year.
Elizabeth Biesel, 26, Olympic swimmer, South Kingstown, Rhode Island -Josh says that Elizabeth was outright identified by one of the other contestants because they'd been watching YouTube videos about how to be a better swimmer. Others guessed she was an Olympian based on her rings tattoo. -She's from the Ocean State. They lived a block away from the beach, so they wanted her to take swimming lessons. She was a rambunctious child and swimming was the only way they could calm her energy. She started breaking records when she was 7 or 8. When she was 13 she made her first national team. At 15 she went to the Olympics. She got good early. Women peak around 22-23, and she ended her career at 24. You couldn't make much money doing it. She swam one of the longer, more grueling races, and her body said "no more." She listened to her body and retired. Some athletes lose their love for swimming because they're embittered by losing by 1/100th of a second, or they leave injured. She left on a good note. Still, if she could swim competitively for the rest of her life, she would. Now she doesn't know who she is or what she's going to do with the rest of her life. Every hour of the day used to have a purpose. Now her days are wide open. She can't keep eating 5,000 calories a day. "It's sort of like I'm mourning the death of Elizabeth Biesel the swimmer." -She was a Survivor fan as a kid because Richard Hatch was from Rhode Island. In her area "Every single household that had a television set was watching Survivor." When they asked her if she'd do the show, she felt pure joy. She said absolutely right away. She's excited about the competition of Survivor. No heated Olympic pools. You're stripped down to your core. She's amazed by the scope of the production apparatus. She's not a schemer. She wants to be a challenge beast - not the best woman but the best overall. She'd love to have a Wendell and Dom relationship with another woman. But, she wants to avoid the drama as long as she can.
My take: Could Chelsea be Wendell to her Dom? She's so wholesome. She's just so "Olympics." I love her and everything she represents. I'd love to see her rocket through the swimming competitions, lapping everyone else. Go Elizabeth.

Overheaven: The South African Civil War - (feedback and input welcomed, full timeline coming soon)

Preface

For context, this is for the actual AH portion of Overheaven - the stuff which happens after the primary 1967 POD, where the Outer Space Treaty isn’t signed, and as a result, space is opened up to military and commercial interests. By the 1990’s there are growing colonies on the moon (the Americans and Soviets landed there in 1969), Mars (the Americans land the first man on the Red Planet in 1976), and Venus (the Soviets establish the first aerostat colony in the “Yellow Planet’s” upper atmosphere in 1978); large rotating space stations with increasingly-permanent populations; mineral exploration of Near Earth Asteroids and the Main Belt; and preliminary manned missions to Mercury and Callisto. This does not refer to events in the FH portions of the setting.
However, this TL also has a bunch of smaller POD’s littered around it. Mostly for fun, but also to build up towards the timeline’s “current year”: 2185. And the South African Civil War is an event which does have repercussions stretching into the late 22nd century. And after much back and forth on the issue, I’ve decided to place the war in 1999-2005. I probably would have preferred to keep all of this under wraps until I had written up the TL into an episodic, chapter-by-chapter format, but I’m sure the actual chapter for this conflict will be much more interesting and engaging than what I present here.
So, with that preface out of the way, here are some of my rough ideas for the South African Civil War:

The Juicy Stuff

Not intrinsically linked to South Africa or its civil war, but my motivation for having it where it is in the timeline is based somewhat on the state of the USSR at the time.
In 1999, the US and USSR are close enough diplomatically that at the start of the year, they opened up the International Peace Bridge connecting Alaska to Siberia. Gorbachev rolls all sixes on the New Union reforms in the early 90’s, and by 1999, I think the USSR should be in a position to go on overseas adventures again. Due to overriding concerns at home, they would have withdrawn from international military engagements for much of the 1990's. For the most part, at least. There’d be some guns going off in the "Near Abroad" periphery as the Soviet deck got reshuffled in the early 90's, probably in Moldova and/or Georgia, which break away from the newfangled Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics along with the Baltic states. Moscow also likely backed up the Americans and South Koreans during the Second Korean War in the early 90’s as well, or at least played a role there diplomatically. However, the 90's mostly sees the Union focus on revitalizing itself and jump-starting its new post-communist economy, changing the world's perception of what the Soviet Union represents, bringing in American, British and Japanese investment and the like, and perhaps resetting their relationship with China; there’d also be a big scaling back of the USSR’s orbital weapons, as well as probably a bit of a fire sale on Soviet extraterrestrial real estate (though they’d hold onto their Venusian colonies for the most part), in order for Moscow to remain financially solvent back on Earth. Intervening in South Africa would be the Red Army's first major engagement overseas since Afghanistan.
At the end of this alternate Cold War, the US withdraws from NATO, which more or less collapses. To replace it, a slightly different European Union (including Switzerland and Norway by 1999, but not the UK) sets up a post-NATO “Joint European Defense Force” (or some better-named organization). And South Africa ends up being their baptism-by-fire, assuming I don’t have it instead be something slightly earlier, maybe involving the Balkans or Morocco. I expect they'll mostly play rearguard and support roles, simply because they won't have the logistics to send in tens of thousands of troops on the other side of the world.
I'm unsure how exactly Apartheid can be made to hold on a little longer, though. Nelson Mandela having a close encounter with a flight of stairs (people conveniently falling down the stairs and dying instantly is a recurring theme in Overheaven - Khomeini and William Proxmire being notable victims) may be a start, but I don't think that's enough to seal the deal. Sanctions will be the bigger issue, though perhaps the huge advances in spaceflight might hog airtime that might otherwise have been spent on raising awareness of Apartheid, thereby making it less of a prominent Western political cause for activists? After all, humans have fairly limited attention spans.
On a somewhat-related and somehow less-ridiculous note, I do quite like the idea of South Africa building a Von Braun wheel to help bolster confidence and moral in the government, and perhaps help turn a profit for the country via some combination of zero-g research and perhaps a space hotel service for unscrupulous millionaires? Maybe some shady spy dealings also take place on "Overbeek Station". So that's canon now, because it’s fun.
Anyway, by the 90's, I'm sure people will become very aware of what's happening in SA, so maybe the stiff sanctions of the 1980's which helped bring down the regime OTL will come into effect in the 90's. The Pahlavis are still running Iran, and by the late-80’s have developed both a manned space program and a domestic nuclear power grid (putting them less than half a turn of the screwdriver away from nuclear weapons), and they’ll probably continue to support South Africa right up until things start getting super-gross. Ditto with regards to Israel. Rhodesia might still continue onward in some form, though I’m still unsure of that bit, or of what role they might play in the Civil War.
Maybe one of you is more knowledgeable about SA history and can help me figure out what political factions would fill the void left by Mandela, or how we could push Apartheid's lifespan a little further.
Anyway, a flashpoint sets the South African tinderbox ablaze in the summer of 1999. The rebels can't defeat the SADF on its own terms, but make it bleed when they bring the fighting to the cities. Foreign volunteers come in to back up either side, and end up radicalizing both. You have white nationalists, Neo-Nazis and extreme anti-communists from the Americas and Europe, along with apolitical mercenaries from odd corners of the world, backing up the Apartheid regime. And black nationalist and Marxist volunteers from Africa and the Caribbean come in to back up the ANC and its allies. Gadaffi wholeheartedly backs the black rebels; perhaps KPA remnants from a collapsed-in-the-early-90’s North Korea show up; Palestinians might get involved in the name of international solidarity; Iran and Israel might try something squirrelly (the latter might wash their hands of South Africa when they notice the Neo-Nazi militants gaining influence there); and, again, things get really interesting if Rhodesia is still around (or if Mugabe rules Zimbabwe).
A cease-fire is declared New Years Eve, at the dawn of the new millennium, and peace talks begin in Bloemfontein. In February of 2000, after much tension, cool heads in both camps (very wary of the extremists who've shown up on the battlefield) end up prevailing and an election is announced for May that year.
In March, however, psychotic Neo-Nazi volunteers from Canada, led by Wolfgang Gröge, hijack the government's nuclear weapons and vaporize Bloemfontein (a neutral zone and a symbol of the South African government’s unwillingness to stand up to “Jewish Bolshevism” or whatever weird conspiracy theory they’re running with) and a few black-majority cities in 45-kiloton mushroom clouds.
The ceasefire instantly breaks down. Everyone is confused and angry. One side is no longer interested in compromise, the other is fearful of being exterminated. Things get, in a word, MESSY. The nuclear detonations of course shock the world and are roundly condemned, as are the racially-motivated killings committed by both sides.
The South African government fortifies itself in Pretoria, executes every last national socialist they can find, and uses chemical weapons to narrowly fend off a major offensive by the ANC. They threaten to use their remaining nukes if the rebels try anything else against Pretoria. Yes, I am referencing RoboCop here, BTW. While the SADF forces and the mercenaries among their ranks hold onto cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, many of the more far-right and racist types end up deserting and forming roving gangs of genocidal fascists, who make up for their lack of numbers compared to the black nationalist and Marxist rebels, with sheer ruthlessness, skill and higher-tier weaponry. At this point, the Libyans have shipped in heavier weapons left over from the Cold War, and are sending in more and more troops to South Africa; Gadaffi’s regime is the only country to recognize the “African People’s Socialist Republic” - a state best described as a black supremacist Khmer Rouge.
Overseas, nobody's really sure what the Hell is going on. Nobody's sure whether or not the South African government is being honest about Canadian Nazis hijacking their nukes and using them against their will, but the optics of turning Pretoria into a nuclear-armed "final redoubt" willing to use chemical weapons - yeah, those optics could not be any worse. Nobody's sure about what the facts are, but everyone - Washington, Moscow, London, Brussels - agrees that the situation has gotten out of hand and someone needs to step in and kick some ass. The UN then authorizes them to do so.
American and Soviet space-based ballistic missiles hit APSR and SADF positions, while an unprecedented joint SEAL/SAS/Spetsnaz operation infiltrates Pretoria and secures the city’s nukes, before Soviet and American airborne troops drop in to capture the Pretoria and Johannesburg in the early hours of the morning, securing both cities by the evening. High above the Earth, Soviet and American space marines board and occupy Overbeek Station without incident. European, British and American troops take Cape Town; Soviet, Australian and American troops grab Durban.
The Libyans began to withdraw when the Americans announced their intention to intercede, though it was the Soviets who were ultimately successful in convincing Gadaffi to pull out; Moscow convinces their new friends in Washington to hand over an item of very deep importance to the Colonel, which was sitting in a box somewhere in Langley since 1982. While the Libyans are not successful in retreating with all the hardware they flew in, it’s mostly outdated crap from the 70’s and 80’s anyway; Libyan T-55’s and South African Olifants ultimately proved no match for the high-tech M1 Abrams and T-90, and the South African Civil War brought deadly aerial and orbital weaponry to bare.
It takes around two months of fighting before the rebels and government forces come back to the peace table.
The Cape Town Talks go on for over a year, and are far less productive or measured this time around than the ones in Bloemfontein, dragging on into 2002. Insurgents cause trouble all over South Africa, and despite the international coalition's best efforts, foreign volunteers are still bringing weapons and fighters into the country. However, most ordinary people are sick of the killing by 2002. Violence, the average South African realizes, has solved nothing and brought naught but destruction and ill will to the whole land.
A peace deal is eventually brokered, which probably results in the partial dismemberment of South Africa. Control of Overbeek Station I see being transferred either to one of the South African successor states, being annexed by the US or UK, or perhaps going independent; it would be interesting if large numbers of white South Africans decide to make Overbeek Station their home and declare independence as the first extraterrestrial country.
In 2004, the Treaty of Cape Town is signed, partitioning South Africa into the Cape Republic (comprising the former Cape Province), the Mzansi Federation (the old Transvaal, Natal and Orange Free State provinces), Republic of Ciskei, Bophuthatswana Confederation and the Free Port of Durban - that last one dominated by South Africans of Indian, Chinese and Malay descent, like a weird African Singapore.
Even stranger is the independence of the Republic of Overbeek Station in 2005, the very first extraterrestrial nation-state, and a bit of a refuge for rich white South Africans. They’re not into Apartheid (that would just be bad PR), but the limited space available on the space station means they can justifiably be more...discriminating in who they allow to live on Overbeek. It wouldn’t be easy for a space colony to secede from Earth, but they’ll land on their feet. I can see them opening a casino, and maybe operating an off-shore (well, off-world) server for various “convenient” services and enterprises. If they play their cards right, perhaps Overbeek might evolve into a Stanford torus in the long-term.
The international coalition sticks around and continues fighting the insurgency, while gradually withdrawing from the region, until the last foreign troops leave around 2005, when the new security forces in the region take over.
Over time, these new countries (minus Overbeek) gradually begin to grow closer economically, as the wounds of the civil war begin to heal. The Association of South African Nations (ASAN) eventually becomes the foundation of the much larger Confederation of Azania, one of the Earth’s leading superpowers in 2185.
In the short term, however, South Africa’s “place in the sun” as a functional African economy is instead filled by Nigeria, and eventually the East African Federation; the latter especially after the collapse of the UK in the 2030’s, and the nationalization of the Royal Space Agency’s prestigious Kilimanjaro Spaceport makes East Africa a big shot in the space game.
Refugees from the South African Civil War (black and white) arrive in Europe, Canada, the United States, and to a far lesser extent, the Soviet Union.
There will of course be war crimes tribunals. The culprits behind the nuclear attacks will of course be tried and executed, as will the crimes of the Apartheid regime and the crimes committed by the black nationalist factions. The ANC might run Mzansi post-war, but that was a position they had to pay for with a good pound or two of flesh, and they had to throw a bunch of dudes under the bus to avoid much more severe consequences. While it may be tempting to have Apartheid war criminals in space, Overbeek is unlikely to even humor the idea of bringing them onboard; a space station has all the downsides of being an island and a landlocked country, so they can’t afford negative press. With regards to Gadaffi, he follows the ANC’s lead and probably throws some people under the bus to save his own ass. Maybe he gives up his WMD’s, or maybe he stops just short of that, or goes for the “nuclear ambiguity” route.
The South African conflict sees the US Army and Red Army (rivals in a yesterday's war that never happened) grow pretty chummy with one another, the blood of one mixing with the other on the battlefield. And while the Europeans start out as the dark horse of the coalition (multiple languages, roughly standardized equipment, lots of inexperienced troops, limited logistical ability) as the war goes on, they improve in leaps and bounds. This causes the Pentagon and the Kremlin to look at each other, and then at the blue cancer metastasizing and federalizing across Europe, and then back at each other. They then gulp nervously at the same time.
So, those are some loose ideas I have. I'd love to hear feedback and suggestions, to help me beef up the lore.

Short Story

Hi all,
Below is a short story I've been working on that has taken what we have seen in the streams (up to #4) and those posted by Sjin and AngoryTom (not including Mysteries.)
Please enjoy, or don't. Feedback welcome!
“Come to Mars,” The advert said, “Start a new life, on a new planet.” The advert showed a pond with a large tree next to it and several people relaxing on the lush grass surrounding it. “Meet new people, and enjoy the Martian landscape from the safety of a dome.” The view changed to people working a farm land, “Work for the greater good of yourself and your neighbours, by working the land to produce food,” the view changed to the inside of an infirmary, “Or assisting with medical procedures,” the view changed again to two people enjoying each other’s company and holding hands, “Or even help expand our population.” The view changed to an overview of several domes, “Sign up to the International Mars Mission today, and live a new life…on Mars.”
The day had finally come. The hatch to the Williamina Fleming, named after the discoverer of the Horsehead Nebular, closed behind us. Our last view of Earth was the summer sun, what little there was of it this far North, shining brightly across the Swedish landscape. The launch site, chosen by the International Mars Mission, a conglomerate of space agencies and private investors, had chosen the site as it had no previous connections to one nation or another, like Cape Canaveral, the Kennedy space center, or Baikonur did. The site was in North East Sweden, near Kiruna, which meant the launch windows were more limited, but the view was beautiful, and brought tears to my eyes. The site was originally built in 1972, primarily for stratosphere research balloon launches and low orbital launches. The IMM heavily invested in the site in early 2018 and it was finally ready to support interstellar launches, such as the Williamina Fleming, in mid 2020. A few test launches were completed and the site was running at 89% success rate, prior to our launch. We strapped ourselves in, the reclined seats, facing up. Like the original shuttles used by NASA, we were all looking forwards out of the window towards the sky. Launch was all remotely operated, nothing for us to do inside. This was mostly so the ships could be recalled from Mars once the ship was refuelled, so it could be reused. This was it, we would be leaving Earth and, most likely, never coming back. The IMM had picked the perfect site to launch from, the backdrop for all the publicity shots, footage and streams would be spectacular. It felt bad to leave it all behind, but I was excited to be heading to Mars. The ship began to rock and move, as the engines ignited. I was forced back into my chair, it was alarming at first, but the training we had received, and breathing exercises meant that as much as the air was being forced out of my lungs by the G forces of launch, I was able to overcome this and remain conscious during the whole thing. We passed from the blue of the Earth sky, into the black abyss of space and began our six-month journey to Mars.
The Williamina Fleming was one of four ships, owned by the IMM. Currently one was on a return trip to Earth, having delivered the drones, rovers and initial supplies to Mars. There was a second ship on Mars, delivering further supplies, the ship we were on and the fourth held in reserve on Earth. There wasn’t much to do on the ship during the six-month flight. All the ships were dual purpose, cargo or passenger ships. This meant everything that was put in just for us to endure the flight, was usually taken back out again if the ship was used for cargo. Likewise, anything put in to secure cargo and RC units could be taken out for our benefit. We passed the time by exercising, chatting, getting to know each other, and planning with Earth control who would be carrying out what jobs once we got to Mars. The things people forget is that it isn’t scientists and astronauts who make a colony, but it’s everyone else who carries out the more mundane tasks, such as the service jobs and catering. The twelve of us had a variety of skills and backgrounds. There was myself, Michael Wolf. I was a trained medical professional and lead medic, Ulrich Becker was the other medic, Sarah Bennett and James Fredrick were our botanists, Claire Woods was one of our scientific researchers, with her husband Steve; who previously owned a bar. Paul Gregory was a geologist, Daisuke was the other researcher, Fiona had been a teacher on Earth, and finally Fleur, Jenni and Cho who had all worked in service industries. They were mostly to fill catering or service area’s in the colony, or so we had been told. They seemed fine with this, being as they were still going to be amongst the first humans to walk on Mars.
It was the final week before we were due to arrive, Earth control advised us that the dome was finished and everything was ready for our arrival. All we had to do was choose who was going to be the first to set foot on Mars. Had we not spent the previous months discussing this issue, as well as many others, the process could have been more difficult. As it was we drew pieces of wire. Sarah pulled the shortest piece and would be the first person to set foot on the surface of Mars. We arrived in orbit around Mars, but our landing was to be delayed by a day, due to a dust storm rolling through the colony area. This could present a risk to us and the ship, but we suspect the delay was also to do with the view of the landing being obscured too much for any good publicity shots. The delay presented us with an opportunity to take photos of Mars from space, as well as Phobos and Deimos, Mars’ two moons, as they orbited around. We couldn’t see the colony from orbit, it was still far too small to see from here, but we could just about make out some of the nearby features that we would start getting to know more closely. The delay lasted around a Martian day, which we’d been instructed to refer to as Sols to avoid confusion as Martian days were roughly an hour longer than an Earth day. We received the command from Earth to buckle up and prepare for landing. There was a rush of excitement and anticipation as the ship began to manoeuvre into its landing pattern. The ship descended towards the surface before slowing and touching down. The compartment we were in filled with cheer as we realised we’d reached the surface. It was another hour before we’d all got ourselves geared up, putting on the specially weighted suits. The suits were weighted to compensate for the lower gravity on Mars than on Earth. This was in case we really didn’t settle on Mars at all, or the whole project was aborted and we were to return to Earth. If we didn’t have the weighted suit there was a risk that a return to Earth could kill us. Once we had those suits on, we donned the air tight suits that would enable us to get from the ship to the dome. The ship far enough away from the dome that the landing didn’t just cover it in dust, but close enough that we weren’t on the harsh Martian surface for too long. As the disembarkation ramp lowered, we were all gathered around the top of it. The view was amazing, a lot more barren than the view we’d left on Earth, but we could see across the dome from where we were. Way off, the other side of the dome, was the wind turbines and solar panel used to generate electricity. We could make out the Moxie units, for oxygen, and the moisture vaperators, which drew moisture from the atmosphere to create water. They didn’t, individually, produce much but enough of them could sustain us for a while. We could also make out an automated fuel refinery within the area and a large dust cloud, we could only assume was the concrete extractors. Martian concrete, for Martian homes. Straight ahead of us, from the ramp, was one of the airlocks to get into the dome, and one of the semiautonomous drones, which we guessed was watching us for publicity shots. The drones were about the size of a small car, with six wheels, three on each side each with independent steering and suspension, two hands at the front on arms, a small head at the front which housed sensors and most of the systems. The cameras were mounted on the head in such a way they looked like eyes. The bulbous back of the drone was for holding resources for transport to where they were needed, it was designed to open backwards on hinges enabling the hands to load objects in easily. Sarah looked back at us, the weight of what was to come clearly weighing on her as she took a deep breath, her shoulders rising and falling, before she bounded down the ramp towards the red surface. She paused for a moment at the bottom of the ramp, as if deciding what to say. As she leapt off the end of the ramp, we could all hear her transmission to Earth control. “It’s taken us many years to reach beyond our moon. But together, as a community of nations, we have reached Mars.” She didn’t linger at the bottom of the ramp once she’d said this. She calmly bounded her way to the airlock. The rest of us followed her down the ramp and into the airlock. Several of the drones made their way up the ramp and reappeared with the supplies we’d brought with us, which was mostly food. After we’d taken the airtight suits off, and passed through the airlocks inner doors, we were free to explore the dome. The dome was laid out with six triangles arranged from the edge to the center, segregated by paths. Three alternating paths led to airlocks, the other three led to utility hubs, where power, water and air came into the dome. Each of these hubs had a green and red light on, presumably to let us know if they were working or not. We all had other priorities over exploring the dome. First task was to claim a room in the living quarters. The living quarters were three structures, two that were three stories tall and one, nearest the middle of the dome, which was two stories. The two taller structures had large windows on the top floor, facing out of the dome, with double beds, large TVs and a large round table. There was also a single bed in a partitioned area. The second floor had two single beds, and large sofa, with a balcony facing into the dome that had two sun loungers on. The ground floor had a kitchen and utilities area for us to shower, wash our clothes and everything else. The two-story structure had the same balcony as the three-story structures, with two single beds and a large sofa, with a large flat screen TV. Claire and Steve, naturally, took one of the double beds. Sarah and Daisuke, who had been building a relationship together, took one of the other double beds. Leaving the rest of us to take the various single beds. After the bed claiming was completed we all made our way to the bar, conveniently placed right next to the living quarters. We celebrated arriving on Mars in one piece, and the IMM seemed happy for this to happen, it was a good opportunity for them to capture some promotional shots for social media and posters.
Our first full day in the dome was spent exploring. Going clockwise from the living quarters, there was the bar, then a nursery, where Fiona would be working when Children arrived at the dome, playground, and research labs, Claire and Daisuke would be working there. Next there was the farm, which would produce food and some oxygen for us if we tended it. By we, I mean Sarah and James as they would have some idea what they were doing. Next to this there was the diner, the infirmary, where myself and Ulrich would be working, and a small garden with several trees in it, and finally the open gym, which comprised of an oval track, several pull up bars and half a basketball court. There wasn’t much to do for some of the jobs, as there were only twelve of us. The jobs where we had two people were split down to half a day each, but even then, there wasn’t much to do in the infirmary, unless someone hurt themselves or became ill. After the first couple of sols, once Sarah and James had tended the farm, prepped the land and planted the soy beans, it became apparent that boredom was going to be our biggest issue. We decided that the diner would become a communal thing, with those of us that had had an easy day taking a turn to cook for everyone. In the first week Fleur discovered that you shouldn’t try to ride the drones around. Simple reason being, if Earth control was commanding the unit, it would be at least thirty minutes before they realised you were nearby and took corrective measures, which would take another thirty minutes. If Earth wasn’t in control of it, it was running automated processes and was probably running unmonitored. When Fleur came to the infirmary with a broken leg and jaw, having been swatted and almost run over by one, we had to make a rule of no riding the drones. To help us alleviate some of the boredom, from around the second Martian week, we began to hold competitions at the track. Who could get around the fastest, which pair could relay the fastest, who could shoot the most hoops from furthest away, who could perform the most pull ups in one visit. Scoreboards were left up and it was all good humoured and honest. Hoop shooting wasn’t as easy as everyone imagines. The lower Martian gravity meant more, often than not, we put too much force behind the ball and threw it halfway across the dome. We started to create new games that took advantage of the lower gravity on Mars, the only issue being that we had to take our weighted suits off to take full advantage of it. The IMM seemed concerned that we were spending more time on recreation than on doing anything productive, but the objective was still survival so they couldn’t push us too hard. Claire and Steve spent a lot of their down time in the garden, relaxing, Daisuke spent a lot of time at the bar, drinking, usually accompanied by Sarah. James, seemed to spend a lot of time on his own, Paul was the only one who seemed disgruntled because, as a geologist, he was expecting to be made use of with rock samples and so forth, but there wasn’t any need for this in the colony, as we weren’t set up to mine anything and were still in the “proof of survivability” stage.
Somewhere around sixty sols after we had landed, after the soybeans had been harvested and potatoes planted, we were woken by the sounds of several of the drones racing through the dome, accompanied by the larger transport loader, carrying supplies. They appeared to be gathering them outside our dome, adjacent to where the ship had landed. It was a large collection of assorted supplied, presumably something was under construction. We started to bet on what it was that was being built. Idea’s ranged from a second dome, to a mine. The IMM weren’t telling us what was going on, they seemed satisfied that we were finding entertainment in guessing. Whatever kept us sane was in their interests I guess. Two weeks after the drones started to gather supplies, Claire announced that she was pregnant. This led to a huge amount of interest from the IMM, they wanted to conduct interviews with her and Steve and get some publicity photos using the drones. The extra interest brought in more funding for the IMM, which meant they could send another rocket of supplies to us. It was a welcome relief, although we weren’t knowingly low on anything, we were low on meat, and since we had no source of meat on Mars, we were reliant on Earth to send some. Meat and alcohol were the only things we asked for. The IMM advised us that the supply ship would not be landing near the dome, and that the drones would bring supplies to us when it landed. But they were impressed that a baby was on its way already. This was a huge milestone for them and would almost certainly prove that humans could survive on Mars. At least in this colony, which we had started to call Primus dome, after the first Roman numeral. As the sols went by the IMM wanted a closer eye kept on Claire, any physical abnormalities or odd blood test results, they wanted to know about. But she seemed to be a picture of health. The drones seemed to have gathered all the supplies they wanted and were beginning to build the foundations for, we were still guessing, another dome. It appeared to be much larger than our own if it was, perhaps twice the size, it was hard to tell. It was another few sols before it became obvious that this was going to be a larger dome, the IMM must have had a lot of faith in us to be building a larger dome already. From what I could remember of the briefing, we still had almost ten Earth months left of the survivability phase of the colony, and the second supply craft was at least five months away now.
The weeks passed quietly, and we became more out of sync with Earth. We watched the second dome being built, it was a spectacle to sit at the diner, look out across the Martian landscape, and see the drones construct the second habitat. It was strange to think the IMM trusted us enough that they were considering sending more humans, after such a short time frame. That being said, the word from Earth control was that we were still on the survivability phase of the colony, but they were hopeful that a birth would mean this phase would be accelerated and that they could get on and get more applicants to us, people who probably knew more about what they were doing than we did. We’d lasted this long, but we still had months of work ahead of us to keep ourselves sane and alive. The dome was the only thing keeping us from freezing or suffocating on the cold harsh surface. Every so often, one of the drones would come away from the new dome and carryout maintenance on our dome. As we watched they would peel off and disappear off towards the solar panels to clear them or realign the wind turbines. It was a marvel to watch, during the down time.
Soon the new dome was built, it dwarfed ours, but it wasn’t connected to any utilities. Earth control advised us not to enter the dome as there was no oxygen or power connected. This would mean that the heating wouldn’t be on, and the air wouldn’t be breathable, yet. It was pure speculation what was going to be built, but Sarah and Daisuke were conducting research that was going to help Earth install blueprints on the drones to build bigger living quarters, or apartment blocks. They were only allowed to discuss so much with us, as these were just research projects and were uncertain what would become of them. Fleur was the first of us to celebrate her birthday on Mars, this was according to Earth time, as oppose to Martian time, but Earth control had provided extra provisions for us all to help us to celebrate. The drones rolled in with birthday cake and alcohol, which had presumably been stored away from us for this occasion.
The drones continued to carry supplies through into the new dome, structures started to take shape and rose from the ground. Some of the structures were familiar, such as the apartment block that Sarah and Daisuke had been working on, there looked like a school was under construction, another infirmary, three tall cylindrical structures, which looked like the hydroponics we had been expecting instead of the farm. There was a large structure, on the other side of the dome, which appeared to be a casino, it looked like the new dome was going to be a mixture of everything we didn’t have, as well as some duplications of what we did have. Maybe they were planning on moving us into a new dome as oppose to bringing new colonists up. Earth control were being allusive about giving us any answers regarding the second dome. It didn’t help us to stay settled as we weren’t sure if we would be moving or not, but they had built three of the apartment blocks in a row, the three hydroponic farms, the casino, the second infirmary and another bar. It was the duplicate bar that made us feel we were going to be moved. The interior of the new dome was looking better, after a couple of months, they’d constructed a lake and another garden, along with a tall cylindrical tower with a control room at the top, I recognised this as a probable structure from our mission briefing. This was a security station, so they must have been planning to bring more colonists to join us.
Time passed further and the next piece of excitement was when the drones began to connect utilities to the new dome. I say it was excitement, but it was terrifying. The new dome was connected to the water supply without any issues, but when they connected it to the oxygen supply the utility hub on our dome switched from green to red. We were experiencing an oxygen shortage. The problem was exacerbated when the drones attached power to the new dome, before resolving the oxygen issue. When the power went live to the new dome, the lights dimmed in ours. Seemed as though the new dome was putting too much strain on the power network. It wasn’t long before we started to see frost forming on the glass of the dome, the heating system must have gone off with the power. The harsh Martian surface meant the temperature was dropping and it wasn’t much longer before we all started to feel it. Our breath was starting to hang in the air ahead of us. Before Earth control would have seen this, we gave up on the idea of work and retreated to the living quarters, huddled together in one of the rooms for warmth. This was a situation we had been briefed on in case a large cold wave came through and the power systems couldn’t keep up with demand. For the oxygen situation, we’d grabbed the oxygen tanks from the airlock and were rationing their usage along with what was in the dome. The dome probably had enough air captured in it to last through the problem, but we didn’t want to risk it. It was obvious when Earth control realised they had made a miscalculation on the second dome, when all the drones raced through towards the utilities area, taking supplies and resources with them. The issues persisted for most of the night and half of the following day, when suddenly the lights all came back on and air began to circulate again. We didn’t know at the time, but we had come close to completely failing the survivability stage. Fortunately, the ship we’d arrived on was still parked outside and had been refuelled. If the need arose, we could have evacuated there. We had no idea what impact this would have had on the results of this phase. But if it was serious enough, the IMM could recall us to Earth before there were any fatalities.
Claire came to term with her baby, we were regularly growing food now from Potatoes and soybeans to corn and wheat. Claire gave birth early one morning, as the sun peeked over the horizon. We’d convinced Earth that it would be best to leave interviews and promotional photographs for a couple of days to allow Claire to recover from the first birth on Mars. The lower gravity may have caused complications that were not apparent in the first moments. News had spread quickly that there had been a birth on Mars, which not only boosted interest and applicants to come to Mars, but also increased funding. Even though we had a couple of months left on the survivability phase, it was decided by the IMM that we could proceed with full colonisation of Mars. Within a month of Claire giving birth, another ship was launched with passengers, just as the ship launched months ago arrived with meat, alcohol and other supplies needed around the colony.
Life became easier as the sols rolled passed. The new dome had taken shape and was starting to look more like a small town. The new dome also had a structure attached, just outside on the Martian surface, which we believed was an extraction facility for pulling metals from underground, so we weren’t reliant on Earth for providing these resources to carry out repairs or new construction projects. This proved to be where Paul would be of most use. As a Geologist, he would be able to extract samples and find exactly what metals were needed, and be able to study any strange rocks brought up by the extractor. He seemed to have a spring in his step, when the IMM instructed him to commence working there. Because it was outside of the shelter of the dome, there was a limit to how long he could spend out there, and one of us would be inside the dome nearby, in case of any accidents or issues. But with Pauls mood lifted, we were all feeling more buoyant about the new arrivals, due in two months’ time, but Paul wanted to establish the extractor before they arrived. He started to work double shifts, coming in only to grab some food and swap air tanks. It was concerning, but he was happy, so no one took too much notice. The problem was, when he came to the end of these shifts on the extractor, he would head straight to the bar and drink himself to sleep. I was concerned he was developing an alcohol addiction, but again, it wasn’t impeding his work and he seemed happy enough. I asked Ulrich to keep an eye on him though, in case he was becoming an alcoholic. The new dome also meant we had new facilities. We’d spread out into it and commandeered the casino, Hydroponics were setup and running, Sarah and James were doing a good job on those and the farm. Claire and Daisuke seemed to have had a falling out, they were now working in separate buildings, but on the same projects. It was odd and couldn’t have been that efficient, but we didn’t want to ask in case it all blew up and caused us all issues.
It was two weeks before the new colonists arrived. We decided to clear the air and ensure that we were all in a good place for when the new arrivals got here. We’d all gathered in the bar in the original dome. Claire had brought her chid, Brian, with her, even though he was contently asleep. The IMM had thought of everything, even the baby’s clothing was weighted to match Earth, supposing we had to evacuate back to Earth. It would cause issues, given that Brian’s birthplace was Mars. We all hoped it wouldn’t happen, but it was nice to see the IMM had thought about it. Daisuke and Claire made up, they’d fallen out over different theories on how best to recycle water, to help with the preservation of water supplies. The discussion was heated, but led to a constructive conversation and an agreement between them to allow a cool off period, if they disagreed on anything, but take things constructively rather than as an attack on their idea. Because there were only the twelve of us, small issues could quickly snowball into catastrophic issues. Because workloads were still light, we began working on welcome packages for the new arrivals. These mostly consisted of small things that we had made ourselves. Much like the Hawaiian Lei, given to new arrivals, we handmade small crowns from the flowers that had grown in the garden. We wanted to start a tradition of peace and welcoming to the colony. Even though decades old treaties had determined that no state could claim territory on a celestial body, we wanted to form our own society on Mars, that could live in peace and not be held by “international policies or disputes”. The International Mars Mission was a great foundation for this, as by its very nature it was multi-cultural and multi-lingual.
The day came for the new arrivals to land. It was strange, mostly because we hadn’t been advised that there were two ships. This meant there were twenty-four new colonists arriving in one go. Fortunately, the IMM advised us of this with enough time for us to make more flower crowns. The first ship landed, near to the ship we had arrived on. There was enough distance between them for dust and debris to not be an issue. We watched the disembarkation process from a new angle, a single drone was hanging around taking publicity shots of the new arrivals. The first of the new twelve colonists waved at us as they made their way down the ramp. Pausing at the bottom to leap off onto the surface. It was a strange feeling to know that these were our new neighbours, these were complete strangers, who we now relied upon to keep us alive, as much as they relied on us. We’d formed a bond between the twelve of us that was built on trust and knowing each other’s skills and weaknesses. These twelve strangers would take us time to build trust with, even if they had formed a bond amongst themselves, we would all be reliant on each other to survive. As they came out of the airlock into the dome, we presented them with the flower crowns. It was a warm welcome, some of them were overwhelmed by the experience of arriving on Mars and now being welcomed to their new home. Tears were shed, hugs were shared and eventually they were released to claim their own apartments, while we walked across the dome to greet the second ship. The first day with the new arrivals was spend in the bars and the casino, no one wanted to start work straight away today. With twenty-four more people to interact with, life became more complicated. Food wasn’t a concern, as the same as when we arrived, they had brought food supplies with them, plus Sarah and James had done a really good job on keeping the farm going and getting the hydroponics online. They handed the hydroponics over to some of the new colonists, who had been recruited because they were botanists as well. Sarah and Daisuke began to work and mingle with the new researchers that had arrived. Ulrich and I took the three new medics on a quick tour of the domes and the two infirmaries. The new colonists, who had been assigned to security, seemed to keep themselves to themselves mostly. Nothing like making people feel like they’re being watched and judged to build bonds with new people.
